Our Story
Harris Hand Barber College & Cosmetology was founded on the enduring legacy of craftsmanship, mentorship, and community upliftment. The institution’s name is a tribute to the founder’s grandfather, Nathaniel Harris, Sr., who holds the distinction of being the first African American Master Barber in Meriwether County, Georgia. Known for his exceptional talent and distinctive technique, placing his large, steady hand on clients’ heads while he worked, Mr. Harris was not only a skilled barber but also a mentor and role model within his community and family.
This legacy of excellence and service deeply influenced the founder, who was inspired from a young age by his grandfather’s dedication to the trade and to the development of younger generations. Under Mr. Harris’s encouragement, several family members pursued the craft of barbering, two of whom are now licensed Master Barbers. This multigenerational commitment to the field laid the foundation for what would ultimately become Harris Hand Barber College.
The journey began in 2010 with the establishment of Harris Hand Barber Shop in Luthersville, Georgia. This entrepreneurial endeavor was driven by a vision to provide quality grooming services while preserving the cultural and educational values passed down through the Harris family. With continued growth and strong community support, a second location—Harris Hand II—was opened in Grantville, Georgia. This location has since transitioned into Harris Hand Barber College & Cosmetology, expanding from service-based operations into a fully realized institution of vocational education.
Harris Hand Barber College & Cosmetology exists not only to train future barbers in technical proficiency but also to instill in them the values of professionalism, discipline, and service. The college is committed to fostering an environment where students can acquire a lifelong skill that enables economic independence and community contribution. Guided by faith and a strong moral compass, the institution seeks to produce graduates who embody integrity, excellence, and pride in their work.
The founder’s journey has been supported by key mentors who have helped shape both personal character and professional vision. In addition to his grandfather, the founder credits Uncle, Bennie Frank Harris, Father, Greenie J. Bynum, Mr. Curtis McGee, Mr. Paul Watson, and Mr. Palmer for their guidance, encouragement, and leadership. Their collective influence has informed the mission and values of the college, helping to ensure that Harris Hand Barber College & Cosmetology remains grounded in purpose and committed to student success.
As the college continues to grow, it remains steadfast in its dedication to excellence in barber education and to upholding the standards required by accrediting bodies and professional licensing entities.
